Hi I'm Jasmyn!
I'm a TV host / writer / producer. I started off as a radio host on 88.9 WERS fm. Known as "DJ Jazzy", I covered the Boston hip-hop scene and interviewed local artists on 889@Nite. I interviewed Kendrick Lamar and it was the highlight of my life. After serving as a radio host for two years, I switched to TV and joined WEBN. I covered the 86th Academy Awards and was flown out to LA to co-host WEBN's Oscars Special. While out in LA, I began working as a red carpet reporter for Maximo TV. I got to interview celebrities like Jon Voight, Niecy Nash, Billy Ray Cyrus, Farrah Abraham, Renee Graziano, Adrienne Bailon, and more.
BUT I quickly learned that my passion wasn't really interviewing celebrities, unless they had an amazing story to tell. I got tired of asking "so ... who are you wearing?" and other basic questions. I wanted to have more meaningful and deep conversations.
Luxegrl became my outlet. I had a direct focus on who I wanted to interview and what I wanted to talk about. I wanted to talk about the complexities of being a woman and I wanted to interview fascinating women that have incredible stories to tell.
My mission became even clearer while seeing what's going on in out world today. There are SO many pressures girls face, the main one being the pressure to look sexually attractive 24/7. Depression and anxiety is literally soaring in the age of social media, as experts have reported. Sally McManus, lead author of this study from the National Centre for Social Research (NatCen), said women aged 16 to 24 had "very high rates" of anxiety and depression.
WTF is happening?
There is no one talking about the underlying issue we're facing. We don't have a good sense of our self-worth and we're allowing outside factors to determine and define that for us.
I'm on a serious mission to get girls to understand their worth. And the only way to do that is to start actually having those conversations, sharing experiences, and hearing other opinions. That's why I created luxegrl.
